The Red Wing Water Works building was constructed in 1884 and used by the City of Red Wing until 1962. The building was constructed by the Northwestern Water and Supply Company of Minneapolis for $80,400.00. After the water towers were built throughout the City of Red Wing, the Water Works facility became obsolete. In 2011, Mike Wilson leased the two buildings (the Water Works building and the reservoir) for a term of 50 years. In 2012 a full scale restoration began with the interior being completely tuck-pointed and windows and doors installed. In 2013, local artist Art Kenyon painted the interior floor in the main Water Works building using a river map design originally done by Marge Vogel. In 2013 Harry Munson’s collection of motors from the Red Wing Motor Company and Phil Revoir’s collection of photos of the Red Wing river area were put on permanent display in the Water Works building, now home to the Red Wing Marine Museum. This project was funded by many generous people from the community and run entirely by volunteers with an interest in Red Wing’s rich river history. Hours are weekends 10AM—6PM and by appointment for school and tour groups and is operated strictly by local volunteers. For more information, visit www.redwingmarinemuseum.com.
