    Job Description

    Work outdoors as a Temporary Seasonal Employee with the City of Red Wing's Public Works Department.


    Timeline Tentatively as follows

    Essential Job Functions

    CEMETERY: 

    Maintains cemetery grounds on a regular basis.

    • Mows grass using both push and riding lawn mowers and trims weeds using weed whipper and other hand tools.
    • Plants petunias, geraniums, and other flowers in pots and urns on or near gravesites according to bequests in the Perpetual Flower Fund.
    • Operates chainsaws and handsaws to cut down trees; trims, removes, and hauls diseased trees and bushes.
    • Performs general clean-up on cemetery grounds, including removing dead branches and flowers and raking leaves.
    • Removes snow from cemetery roads, paths, and gravesites to allow for year around burials and access. 
    • Waters plantings, trees, lawns and other greenery using watering cans, sprinklers, or Cushman scooters equipped with water tanks and spray apparatus.
    • Picks up trash and debris from cemetery grounds and buildings; collects and sorts for recycling or disposal
    • Assists with funeral and burials.
      1. Shovels, backhoes, or otherwise digs earth for standard or oversized casket gravesites; refills after funeral service.
      2.  Receives caskets from mortuaries for winter storage and transports caskets from the chapel basement up to ground level to facilitate spring burials.
      3. Operates a jackhammer to remove frozen ground to perform winter burials.
      4. Assists in pouring of footings for monuments, installing concrete bases and pedestals for markers identifying gravesites or for decorative purposes.
    •  Completes shop work, including routine maintenance and oil changes on equipment and vehicles.

    PARKS/DOWNTOWN:

    • Performs landscape and park maintenance, including planting and watering flowers; pulling weeds; mowing and trimming lawns, fields and parks; and maintains trees and shrubbery. 
    • Maintains parks and ballfields on a regular basis
    • Cleans restrooms, toilets, sinks and showers, including garbage cleanup at parks or other City facilities as assigned. 
    • Performs minor maintenance and cleaning at general parking ramps. ·  
    • Performs park maintenance, including refuse and rubbish pickup, operating 4-wheel Cushman Scooters only.

    MARINA:

    • Performs duties at marina store, including cash of sales of goods and fuel.
    • Performs marina duties including pumping fuel, pumping waste water and assisting boaters from boats.
    • Assists in the launching, removal and storage of boats.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    STREETS/UTILITIES:

    • Performs various painting tasks using brush/roller including picnic tables, fire hydrants, buildings and hockey rinks as assigned.
    • Assist Utility/Public Service workers in maintenance of the City's systems including gate valves and hydrants 
    • Assists with construction of concrete curb and gutter and crosswalk, curb and parking stall painting using and/or operating one-ton pickups, air compressors, jackhammers and airless spray painters.
    • Assists with street sign and guard rail installation.
    • Assists with playground construction, including equipment installation and play area construction as assigned.
    • Assists with sanitary and storm sewer maintenance including jetting, rodding and flushing.
    • Assists with custodial, cleaning at various City facilities.
    • Mow and weed whip around at job sites.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    MECHANICS' HELPER:

    Completes shop work, including routine maintenance and oil changes on equipment and vehicles. Assists Mechanics in the Shop.

    WASTE CAMPUS:

    • Ride-along with City employees helping with refuse and recycling collection tasks on regular scheduled collection routes. Includes pulling dumpsters.
    • Operate skid steer to help load garbage.
    • Help with Machine maintenance/repair including greasing and oiling. 
    • Performs various painting tasks.
    • Assists with custodial, and cleaning duties.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    **Positions start at $14.00 per hour. Seasonal's at the waste campus start at $15.00 per hour. 

    ***Employees who work at least 300 hours in a season may receive up to a $100.00 performance bonus for satisfactory work, working at least 350 hours in a season may receive up to a $150 bonus and those working at least 400 hours in a season may receive up to a $200. 

    Experience, Education, Certifications, Physical Requirements

    Minimum Qualifications: Must be 18 years of age or 17 years of age with a high school diploma (or GED equivalent). Must possess valid driver’s license.  

    Desired Qualifications:   Public contact experience.  Certification in First Aid is desired. Experience in counter sales and related work experience is also desired.  

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    • Considerable ability to operate light-duty pickup trucks, mowers, Cushman Scooters and park maintenance vehicles. 
    • Considerable ability to practice teamwork and to add value to City operations consistent with department policies and the City Council Strategic Plan.
    • Considerable ability to perform physical labor for long periods of time including pushing, pulling, crouching, bending, standing, walking, or sitting sometimes using repetitive movements to perform the work. 
    • Considerable ability to see utilizing color vision to safely operate machinery, vehicles and equipment, to avoid pedestrians, animals and vehicles in traffic and to use large motor skills while performing the work. 
    • Considerable ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions year around. 
    • Considerable ability to work and communicate effectively and courteously with City staff and the general public.
    • Working ability to work flexible hours and schedules as assigned including evenings and weekends.
    • Working ability to work with exposure to loud noises from operating equipment and around unpleasant fumes and hazardous chemicals.
    • Working ability to operate equipment in a safe manner.
    • Working ability to work without direct supervision and in a team atmosphere.
    • Working ability to use telephones, radios, personal computers, and miscellaneous office equipment.
