    March 08, 2025

Red Wing, MN – Representatives from Red Wing Arts, Sheldon Theatre, Anderson Center, and Red Wing Area Chamber of Commerce joined arts advocates from across Minnesota at the State Capitol on March 4, 2025, for Arts Advocacy Day. Organized by Minnesota Citizens for the Arts (MCA), this annual event brings together advocates to emphasize the vital role arts and culture play in strengthening the economy, enhancing communities, and enriching the lives of Minnesotans.

Statewide, the arts and culture sector is a significant economic driver. According to MCA, the nonprofit arts and culture industry contributes $12 billion annually to Minnesota’s economy and supports over 138,360 jobs. Additionally, arts-related tourism brings in millions of dollars each year, benefiting local businesses and services.

Locally, Red Wing exemplifies how the arts fuel economic growth and community development. The Sheldon Theatre welcomes over 30,000 visitors annually, boosting hospitality, dining, and retail sectors. Red Wing Arts attracts thousands to its annual Fall Festival, hosts multiple music and art events, providing a direct impact on local businesses and showcasing regional artists. The Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Studies fosters creativity and innovation, supporting artists-in-residence from across the country and hosting programs that engage both locals and visitors.

“The arts are not just about entertainment; they are an economic engine that supports jobs, drives tourism, and fosters a sense of place,” said Michelle Larson, President & CEO of the Red Wing Area Chamber of Commerce. “We’re here at the Capitol to ensure that policymakers understand the importance of continued investment in the arts for the vitality of our community and state.”

During meetings with legislators, the Red Wing delegation emphasized the need for sustained funding for arts organizations, particularly through the Legacy Amendment, which dedicates sales tax revenue to support Minnesota’s cultural heritage. Investing in the arts means investing in economic growth, workforce development, and vibrant communities.

The delegation extends its gratitude to Minnesota Citizens for the Arts for organizing Arts Advocacy Day and for their ongoing efforts to support and promote the arts statewide.
